We’ve seen a steady increase in asset owners and asset managers implementing multi-asset class portfolios. In this CutterCast, we discuss the systems, tools, and processes that firms use to support these portfolios, as well as the challenges they encounter at different points in the portfolio management workflow.
Gina McCafferty has 30 years of experience in the financial services industry. She served at Cutter from 1999 to 2011 as Principal and Managing Director of CutterResearch, and she was instrumental in growing that business. Gina returned to Cutter in 2017, and established and ran the company’s Wealth Management research division. In 2019, she was appointed to Head of Research, responsible for Asset Management and Wealth Management product development and delivery to over 200 member firms around the globe. Gina was previously at Investit Ltd., where she served for six years as head of the company’s research service. Prior to that, she held senior positions at DST International with product responsibility for their global accounting and performance measurement systems, and at SunGard as Vice President of Client Services for their securities trading products.
Shankar Subramanian has over 25 years of industry experience in investment management and technology solutions. Shankar has a deep understanding of investment data management, portfolio management, risk management, investment accounting, and alternative investments. At Cutter Associates, he heads the Risk and Compliance practice, helping client with investment risk management, and asset allocation, as well as providing support for compliance with consulting on trading forensics, communication surveillance, regulatory reporting, and guideline compliance. He advises on, and designs, operating models, selects systems, and implements business and technology solutions. He also leads development of Cutter’s alternative investments practices and the firm’s efforts to provide thought leadership and strategic and tactical advice to asset owner clients.
Prior to joining Cutter, Shankar held senior roles at IBM Global Services and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), advising clients and leading global delivery teams in large engagements. Shankar holds a Bachelor of Science in engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology and an MBA in finance and information systems from the Indian Institute of Management.
Andrew Jenkins brings more than 20 years of experience in buy-side financial services, with a focus on project management in the areas of performance measurement and attribution, portfolio analytics, GIPS compliance, risk management, and data management. At Cutter Associates, Andrew works in the firm’s Strategy & Data Management and Performance Measurement practices.
Andrew is a thought leader on performance measurement business practices and GIPS compliance, regularly speaking on the topics at industry conferences. Andrew has a deep understanding of asset management operational and technology processes, and has successfully managed several large-scale operational and systems integration projects throughout his career, including data warehouses, performance measurement and attribution systems, web-integration services, and the acquisition and implementation of a client reporting service. He is active in multiple industry groups in the areas of performance measurement and risk and in board-related forums.
Prior to joining Cutter, Andrew was a director at Charles Schwab Investment Management, where he oversaw performance measurement and attribution, risk, client reporting, and competitive research. He previously worked in the Board Analysis Services Group at Lipper Analytical (now Thomson Reuters). Andrew holds a bachelor of arts in economics from the University of Colorado.
James Conz is Baupost’s Chief Information Officer, having joined the firm in the fall of 2013. His team is responsible for all elements of information technology strategy and execution. Before joining Baupost, James was most recently Chief Information Officer and Chief Security Officer for MFS Investment Management, where he worked for eight years. Prior to that, James was Chief Technology Officer at FireTower, Inc., an information security consultancy which served clients in the financial services, government and health care sectors. James graduated cum laude from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst with a B.A. in comparative literature.
Michael Wissell is the Senior Vice President, Capital Markets & Total Portfolio at HOOPP, where he oversees the Capital Markets investment teams (Derivates, Funding, Collateral Management, FX, Credit, Fixed Income, Public Equites) and the Total Portfolio initiatives (Asset-Liability Management, Portfolio Construction and Risk Budgeting, ESG, Investment Research and Analytics, and the Actuarial Services teams).
Michael’s 30+ year career began in 1987 in the trading room at TD Bank. He continued in various roles with TD, and when he left in 2002 he was Managing Director of TD Securities. He then moved to the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan as Portfolio Manager and progressed to Senior Vice President leading the Tactical Asset Allocation, Portfolio Construction, and Public Equities departments. Over his career Michael has served on several Boards including the Canadian Coalition for Good Governance and the TMX Group.
Michael earned his BA with Honours from Carleton University and his MBA from McMaster University. He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD.D) designations.
